You always remember your first…

I think Valentine’s Day is a thoroughly appropriate day to mention that I have received my very first rejection letter. Okay, well, it was actually an email, but that’s just a technicality. A piece I submitted in early January has been officially rejected.

I suppose I could be feeling discouraged by this, but in fact, the opposite is true. For one thing, getting a rejection notice at all, especially in such a timely manner, lets me off the hook in terms of wondering if my work has fallen into the submission black hole. It also, at least to me, puts the stamp of respectability on my choice of submission sites. And frankly, how can you call yourself a real writer if you haven’t been properly and officially rejected?

I know I’m not the first to have this reaction, but it has also encouraged me to continue submitting until I get another “yes”! I know it’s going to happen. I can feel it…
